Sr. Staff Geologist (New Ventures)

    The focus of the position will be to conduct international new ventures evaluations and help generate new plays working as part of an integrated team to directly support existing exploration projects with comprehensive petroleum system evaluations as part of history analysis and basin modeling work.

Such work includes:

  • Work with area regional exploration teams to assist in high-grading areas to identify, quantify, risk, and document new subsurface leads on existing acreage.
  • Drive basin modeling projects and incorporate project team structural and stratigraphic interpretations into integrated petroleum system evaluations to conduct basin modeling studies and total petroleum system assessments
  • Work with the project teams as needed to optimize geochemical data acquisition programs for exploration and appraisal drilling campaigns.
  • Plan and execute appropriate geological evaluations and field work programs as necessary.
  • Develop a strong and cooperative working relationship with partners and stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively with corporate management to progress opportunities.

The preferred candidate will ideally be a 15+ year career exploration geoscientist with 5 years or more of direct experience in applied basin modeling and integrating geochemistry. Strong individual initiative, project leadership, and communication skills are as important as technical competency.  The ideal candidate will be seeking a hands-on technical role to assist in evaluating, capturing and exploring new acreage.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Capable of new venture exploration evaluations with broad general knowledge of basin analysis, petroleum systems definitions, geochemical evaluation, structural geology, well log interpretation, sedimentology, seismic interpretation, and regional mapping.
  • Maintaining and developing positive and effective working relationships with partners.
  • Communicating effectively with corporate management to progress growth opportunities.
  • Developing budgets for G&G activities and AFE estimates as needed.
  • Mentoring less experienced G&G staff.


Required Experience

  • Master’s degree in the Geology.
  • A minimum of 15 years’ experience as an exploration geologist and 5 years applied basin analysis / basin modelling experience.
  • Excellent organizational skills and work prioritization judgement to complement technical focus and handle multiple concurrent objectives effectively.
  • Experience in developing and executing work programs and budgets a strong plus.
  • Current 2-D and 3-D integrated workstation interpretation experience required with SMT/Kingdom experience preferred. Hands on interpretation work is critical to contributing in this role - petrophysical skills a strong plus.
  • Strong Basin Modelling experience and software skills including BasinMod, Genesis and Trinity systems or equivalent – strong working knowledge of structural geology a plus
  • Experienced in applying both play and prospect risk analysis techniques
  • Proficient in ArcGIS
  • Ability to clearly summarize and communicate concepts and ideas both to peers and management in writing and in presentation.
  • Able to think and act creatively, and constructively challenge conventional thinking while maintaining focus on solving relevant and important technical challenges
  • Travel as needed in the US & overseas to attend data-rooms and to meet with licensing authorities and current and prospective partners
