Job Description:

Duties are numbered for convenience, and do not indicate order in terms of importance, frequency that the duty is performed, or the amount of time spent on the duty.

1) Removes debris from walks, lawns and parking lots by hand and operating power vacuum sweeper. Empties trash cans and ashtrays on campus grounds.

2) Maintains outside premises in an attractive and safe condition. Clears leaves, cuts grass, pulls weeds, and trims shrubs, trees and edges lawn. Operates power equipment (i.e. chainsaws, blowers, mowers, etc.).

3) Performs landscaping responsibilities to lawn areas. Transplants, removes and plants flowers, trees and bushes. Applies mulch to landscaped areas. Waters grass, flowers, shrubs and bushes as necessary. Under supervision of licensee, applies fertilizer, plant food, and weed killers as appropriate.

4) Utilizes shovels, snow blowers, tractors and trucks for snow removal. Clears walks, stairs, parking lots and roadways of ice and snow. Applies salt, calcium and sand to various areas to melt ice and provide safer conditions.

5) Participates in planning and building phases of construction on campus grounds. Prepares and trenches construction site.

6) Paints, seals pavement, installs signs and performs general cleaning responsibilities to maintain sidewalks, parking lots, roads and building exteriors.

7) Performs preventive maintenance and repair of grounds equipment. Assembles, repairs and assists in installation of structures such as exterior furniture, light poles and walls.

8) Provides general maintenance support and assists with set-up during special events.

9) Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and predictable attendance and works overtime as required to meet workload demands.

10) Performs other related duties as required.

Other Duties & Responsibilities: Picks up supplies and equipment. Assists the Police Department during building evacuations and emergencies.

Usual Physical Demands: The incumbent of this position typically exhibits the physical demands identified in the Functional Job Analysis on file in the College's Human Resources Department and which is periodically reviewed and updated. Physical demands listed in the Functional Job Analysis are not job qualification standards, but are used to help the College assess and determine reasonable accommodations for otherwise qualified individuals covered by the American's with Disabilities Act.

While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly walks, and occasionally stands and sits. The employee occasionally uses hands to hold and control tools and equipment. The employee reaches with hands and arms, and stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls. The employee occasionally exhibits digital dexterity and eye-hand coordination when performing maintenance tasks. Employee frequently lifts or exerts force on items, with varying weights of more than 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Normal working conditions with occasional exposure to dirt, dust, debris and smells. Under supervision of licensee, works with fertilizers and weed killers. Employee is occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions and is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Employee is regularly exposed to minor cuts, burns or other incapacitating injuries. Employee is at occasional risk of electrical shock. Employee regularly works near moving parts and occasionally in high, precarious places. Employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic and caustic materials. Employee is regularly exposed to loud noises.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: grounds maintenance methods, tools, materials and equipment; vehicle mechanical systems; vehicle preventive maintenance methods; grounds maintenance safety practices; mowing and landscaping methods, materials and equipment. Skill in: operation and use of grounds maintenance equipment; simple landscaping and planting. Ability to: develop and maintain good working relationships with associates, supervisors, job contacts and general public; work independently demonstrating initiative; exhibit flexibility in work schedule and job tasks; identify existing or potential problems and recommend viable solutions; perform manual labor for extended periods of time; stand for extended periods of time; push, pull, lift and move objects of varying weight; understand and follow instructions; identify areas in need of grounds maintenance work and determine appropriate work method.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED with at least one year experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping or closely related field. Possession or ability to obtain Forklift Operator Certification. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Additional Information: Must be insurable to operate a vehicle, as a condition of initial and continued employment. May work at off-campus sites. ODA Pesticide License in Category 6A, 8 and Core must be obtained within the 180 day Probationary period.
