Assistant Vice President, Diversity and Inclusion


Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion/Chief Equity Officer, the Assistant VP for Diversity and Inclusion will provide strategic leadership for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and serve in an instrumental role in the development of a comprehensive prevention and education plan with the focus on creating a foundational cultural competence across the Berklee College of Music Community. The Assistant VP will provide oversight to the Equity Leadership Team, and provide oversight in collaboration with the Chief Equity Officer on the successful execution of the Equity Policy and Process.    


  • Provide leadership and oversight to the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Develop and articulate a comprehensive plan for institutional diversity and inclusion that supports a student-centric paradigm and provides leadership and support for those supporting students.
  • Develop and articulate a comprehensive prevention and education strategy that supports faculty and staff in further education, knowledge and practice to advance goals of inclusivity, equity and diversity.
  • Provide oversight of the Equity Leadership Team; provide oversight of Equity Deputies, goal setting, training, implementation of initiatives to advance diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • In partnership with Human Resources, develop and implement on-going training and education opportunities to advance understanding, and practice as it relates to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
  • Develop and lead components surrounding identity development in the redesigned ACI course entitled LENS.

  • Create meaningful initiatives to increase community within the newly created Center for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
  • Identify, develop, implement, assess and evaluate programs and services that serve to promote student development with a particular emphasis on cultural competency, diversity and inclusion. 

  • Develop and implement a strategy to infuse diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout core campus life departments (Residential Housing and Operations, Student Activities and Leadership, Orientation, and Community Standards), Faculty Development Programs, and services for our staff.
  • Serve as an advisor and mentor to diverse student clubs and organizations and determine strategies to support student membership.
  • Serve in a leadership capacity regarding the College’s Diversity and Inclusion Framework as it relates to training, education, and dialogues.
  • Identify, develop and implement diversity and inclusion awareness, training, professional development and education programs in collaboration with the various constituencies of the campus community. 

  • Serve in collaboration and partnership with various constituencies across the campus to advance the mission of the Office with regard to diversity, inclusion and equity. 

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to VP of Student Affairs, Diversity & Inclusion/Chief Equity Officer on matters related to student and campus diversity and provide essential updates to senior leadership and executive team in matters related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. 

  • Identify and propose strategic recommendations that support the enhancement of campus climate. 

  • Develop and maintain working relationships with external organizations that support institutional and departmental efforts to advance, diversity, inclusion and equity. 

  • Develop, propose and effectively manage resources needed to achieve overall goals. 

  • Have capacity and ability to serve as a representative of the institution to internal and external audiences on matters related to diversity, inclusion and equity. 

  • Work in partnership with the Office of Faculty Development in the successful selection, training, and implementation of the ETUDE Fellowship program.
  • Develop a strategic plan that creates a stronger cultural competency model for faculty, staff and students.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with the Employee Resource Groups/Affinity Groups. Identify faculty and staff leadership for each group, provide appropriate resources, and support services to advance these groups.
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and organizations reflecting a broad range of identities, perspectives and experiences.

Required Experience

  • Master’s degree in student personnel, counseling, higher education administration or related field. PhD or EdD preferred in Diversity, Inclusion, Multiculturalism, Higher Education Administration.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of related experience in student affairs, diversity and inclusion, equity and multicultural affairs.
  • Significant experience working in the area of diversity & inclusion in a complex institutional environment preferred.
  • Evidence of an established record of activism, leadership, recruitment, and mentorship and a desire to collaborate in addressing issues of diversity, discrimination equity, and justice within and beyond the college.
  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge in research and practice in the field of diversity, justice, critical methodologies, and equity in education.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and leading new initiatives or programs to advance the equity and social justice mission of an academic department or college.
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with the public, parents, staff, students, and faculty.
