Business Manager

The Business Manager is responsible for all aspects of accounting, supply chain, financial planning and analysis at the mine. Responsibilities include timekeeping and payroll, billing and accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, coal and supplies inventory management, procurement, extensive knowledge of the Lignite Mining Agreement, budgeting and forecasting, financial planning and analysis, as well as reporting of financial and operating results.

Specifically, the Business Manager will (a) ensure that transactions are recorded timely and accurately and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and in compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act as well as with the Lignite Mining Agreement; (b) oversee the accounting, procurement & inventory management areas (c) active involvement in the mine planning and analysis for budget submittals to the customer and financial forecasts to corporate

The Business Manager will lead a staff of three direct reports and work in close collaboration with the Mine President and other mine departments, i.e. engineering, environmental, safety, operations, maintenance, and human resources. The Business Manager will also work closely with corporate departments of tax, accounting finance and treasury.

The Business Manager will be expected to (a) assist the Engineering department in the compilation of all budgets and forecasts; (b) understand the details and business drivers to ensure the budget assumptions are appropriate and; (b) challenge and improve the processes used to develop and compile the budget.

  • Responsible for the timely and accurate submittal of timekeeping and payroll information
  • Accounts payables are paid in timely manner and all reasonable discounts are taken
  • Oversee the efficient operation of supply chain from inventory through procurement
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Lignite Mining Agreement to ensure that all business related practices are in compliance and customer billings are per the terms of the agreement.
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system, including electronic data and files developed under user defined applications, including version control and in accordance with company policies
  • Maintain the system of controls over accounting transactions and systems in accordance with company policies
  • Issue timely and complete periodic financial information and management cost reports
  • Report working capital requirements to corporate treasury personnel to ensure that the company's cash needs are met
  • Assist the Engineering department on compiling forecasts and budget projections for submittal to the customer and corporate
  • Analysis and reporting of variances to plans, budgets and financial
  • Understanding the JDEdwards EAM system and how the transactions flow through the system. Troubleshooting and resolution on system related issues
  • Maintain relationships with mine location personnel, corporate personnel and customers to ensure proper communications
  • Ensure compliance of all business aspects regarding vendor supply agreements and service agreements as well as work to minimize financial exposure and risk.
  • Oversight of all business related external and internal audits
  • Exhibit flexibility and willingness to take on new responsibilities and assignments as they are identified and assist with various ad-hoc projects
  • Supervise accounting and supply chain supervisors
  • Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate departmental staff

Required Experience:
  • Undergraduate degree from four-year university or college, preferably a Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting , or business administration and master's degree in business administration or other evidence of substantial business knowledge
  • 10 years of progressive accounting and planning /analysis experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in leading a business or accounting team, the annual planning function, economic evaluation and analysis, and presenting to management personnel
  • CPA (or equivalent experience) is preferred
