Job Summary
Independently perform diverse financial analysis for a school/unit and assist department management with their financial planning efforts, budget analysis and monthly reporting.

Core Duties
  • Conduct complex financial analysis and update financial models and projections
  • Analyze and project budgets and financial activity for multiple programs
  • Provide technical advice and problem resolution for a school/unit financial community
  • Enhance, produce and distribute unit-specific planning materials; develop and produce materials to facilitate annual budget planning and financial monitoring of budget-to-actuals at the local level
  • May consolidate local budgets to facilitate the upload process
  • Review financial data and explore options for report development within University financial applications
  • Ensure financial compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations

Additional Responsibilities
Reporting to the Senior Financial Partner, the Financial Analyst will oversee the core financial activities for the department. The Financial Analyst will act as the custodian of financial data and metrics reporting, perform diverse and in-depth analysis, record and track expenses and income flows, ensure accuracy of financial accounting and oversee the budget utilization for all projects with unrestricted and restricted funding sources for the department.

The successful Financial Analyst combines data analysis, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to prioritize and handle a wide range of tasks simultaneously, using good judgment and problem-solving skills. The Financial Analyst requires impeccable attention to detail and the ability to manage complex situations with diplomacy and discretion.
Specific duties include:
  • Oversee and report on budgets, expenses and adjustments on a monthly basis to ensure accuracy of financial data and budget utilization; ensure integrity and consistency of data between the University's financial systems and internal reports/budgets
  • Analyze financial data and produce reports for use in strategic planning; prepare complex and varied financial reports— including ad hoc reports—that require selection, preparation, and interpretation of data
  • Develop and maintain department-wide metrics reporting, financial statements, analysis and modeling to inform strategic planning and decision making;
  • Review and approve departmental expenditures (i.e. travel and expense reimbursements, vendor payments, vendor set-up, invoice preparation and processing, and etc.); serve as principal source of information on complex fiscal policies and procedures including, travel guidelines and reimbursement policies, contract negotiation, etc.
  • Work with program managers and project leads in setting-up project budgets and track their expenses
  • Manage financial aspects of HILT Grant Programs; manage creation of new subactivities, review and update paperwork for outreach to schools/recipient groups; transfer funds and assessments; run reports on outstanding funds; roll-back unused funds; coordinate compensation
  • Manage grant related funds, restricted gifts and revenue streams to ensure expenditures align with terms and timelines; coordinate with University and external partners; create invoices as needed
  • Provide regular and ad hoc financial information to administrators and team members
  • Other duties and projects as assigned

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications
  • MBA or MS in Finance or Accounting preferred
  • Expert user of Excel, including spreadsheet modeling, complex formulas, pivot tables, and macros
  • Expertise in data extraction, analysis and report presentation
  • Excellent computer skills in a PC environment including Microsoft Office and competency with databases
  • Strong financial knowledge required, detail-oriented and ability to work independently
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive data with discretion, creatively solve problems, generate new and improved financial processes, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Understanding of Harvard University financial processes, chart of accounts, and accounting tools and systems strongly preferred.
