Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 12pm-4pm; Friday 2pm-6pm. 20 hours per week.

Job Description:

Duties are numbered for convenience, and do not indicate order in terms of importance, frequency that the duty is performed, or the amount of time spent on the duty.

1) Provides advice and support to students including interpreting usefulness of reference materials for student projects, advises students on selection and focus of topics for research papers, and guides students in development of effective search strategies.

2) Provides individual instruction to users with varying skill levels, in the research process and in effective use of electronic and print resources and databases.

3) Conducts group instruction sessions for students and faculty.

4) Teaches skills needed to identify, locate, access and evaluate information and resources, and develop information literacy knowledge to navigate and locate varying types and formats of information sources.

5) Researches, evaluates and selects library materials to assist in maintenance and upgrading of print and electronic reference and circulating collections.

6) Assists in evaluation and selection of print and electronic periodicals collection. Maintains current expert knowledge of multiple electronic databases used by students, faculty and staff.

7) Collaborates with faculty in development of instruction sessions tailored to the curriculum, class assignments and student readiness.

8) Develops instructional modules for general and course specific library research.

9) Responds to faculty requests for development of effective library research assignments.

10) Initiates, plans and develops tutorials and supporting instructional materials for specific databases or research needs and specific user groups.

11) Monitors computer equipment used to access library information. Contacts IT support if service is needed for non-functional equipment.

12) Advises students on citation methods, copyright issues and provides other support as needed to promote learning and research success.

13) Contributes to the development of library website and may be responsible for a significant portion of web pages, online research guides, and other library publications. Promotes library services at college events and through written articles in campus media.

14) Provides library instruction sessions at off-campus sites. Records statistics for reference and instruction sessions.

15) Serves on library and college committees. Participates in library assessment activities.

16) Maintains confidentiality of patron records and other information.

17) Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and predictable attendance and works overtime as required to meet workload demands. Performs other related duties as required.

While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly stands and walks, and frequently sits at a desk to conduct reference research. Employee frequently reaches, bends or kneels to retrieve and shelve books. Employee regularly talks and listens to patrons, and frequently reads computer screens, catalogues, books and other material. Employee regularly lifts items up to 10 pounds, and occasionally pushes and pulls large book trucks up to 25 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: library science; research methods, sources and databases; library practices and procedures; Dewey Decimal System; online catalog systems; online searching techniques; Microsoft office and other computer applications. Ability to: work with public; work individually without supervision and in teams; evaluate information sources for content, authority and relevancy; analyze complex reference requests; demonstrate a broad knowledge base; develop and maintain good working relationships with library patrons, co-workers and other job contacts; maintain confidential and sensitive information; categorize materials in subject, numerical and alphabetical order; maintain good public relations as library representative; exhibit analytical thinking. Skill in: verbal and written communications; listening; teaching and transmitting ideas to persons of diverse backgrounds and learning levels; conducting research and related problem solving; researching general and technical information; scan and analyze large quantities of information for relevance to research question; operation and maintenance of library computer system; use of the Internet; routine typing; spelling; maintaining registration and other operational records.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be currently working towards a Master's Degree in Library Science or related filed. At least 1 years of progressively responsible experience working in a library or a related field. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).

Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or closely related field.
