Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Analytical Chemist to work in our Materials and Fuels Complex Research department. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off.

INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel development and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.

Responsibilities Include:

You will use chemical measurements to determine the identity of chemical materials and the composition of compounds, solutions, and mixtures. This includes the development of methods and techniques for performing chemical analysis and the execution of the analytical procedures.

  • Conduct research to improve existing and improve new capabilities and methodologies for reviewing and interpreting data in area(s) of specialty (e.g., nuclear science, gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometric detection, radiobioassay, etc.).
  • Design and participate in experiments to acquire data to support scientific improvements and evaluate new research concepts supporting area(s) of specialty.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, operations, and other technical resources.
  • Be a technical liaison with other divisions with regards to analytical capabilities. May work directly with a variety of laboratory R&D customers requesting analytical services, R&D project principal investigators, and line management.
  • Identify new research opportunities. Work with other staff to develop concepts for new products and services for potential research sponsors, leading to proposal generation, and working with intramural researchers to specify measurement science projects that support their larger goals.
  • Communicate results to internal and external sponsors by written technical reports and oral presentations.
  • Create reports and provide materials for documentation. Write research proposals to gain new funding for projects from sponsors.
  • May develop/recommend changes in program processes. Ensure that onsite support practices meet the requirements of the quality assurance plan and that quality control (QC) provision requirements are implemented at required frequencies.
  • May prepare radiological samples in hot cells, gloveboxes, or radiological fume hoods.
  • Collaborate with facility research and operational technicians to develop procedures, training, protocols, and methods.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, operations, and other technical resources to support the Division.
  • Support senior researchers and customers with operations of IFCS test beds equipment.
  • Follow established work control protocols for self, peers, and researchers.
  • Write research proposals to gain new funding for projects.
  • Coordinate facility research and operational technicians to develop procedures, training, protocols, methods, qualification plans, operational readiness, and ensure research quality.
  • Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, operations, and other technical resources to support the Division.
  • Provide technical evaluations for other divisions with regards to capabilities.
  • Perform the SME function for one or more aspects of IFCS test bed areas within 18 months
  • Organize and propose new research program elements, validate work control & release, and support integration into the FCF programmatic work.
  • Lead research proposals to gain new funding for projects from sponsors.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Level 2: Bachelor's degree or higher in Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Geochemistry, Material Science and 2 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Level 3: Master's degree or higher in Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Geochemistry, Material Science and 5 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience in academia, private or nuclear industry.·
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.


Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($75,804 - $155,496) / Level 3 ($91,008 - $186,588). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
