The Assistant Director, Talent Development will lead a variety of programs aimed at supporting and growing a high-performing, healthy, fulfilling, and engaging work experience at HBS Online. This role will work directly with HBS Online staff, managers, candidates, and HBS HR to continue to build out an innovative and effective team.

Position Description

Reporting to the Human Resources Director, HBS Online, the Assistant Director will lead a variety of programs aimed at supporting a high-performing, healthy, fulfilling, and engaging work experience at HBS Online. This role works directly with HBS Online staff, managers, new hires and HBS HR to continue to build out an innovative and effective team.

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Talent Development and Performance Management

  • Manage HBS Online annual performance review process, advocating for its importance and ensuring that the team meets School deadlines and objectives. Coach managers on goal setting, feedback, documentation, and appropriate ratings.
  • Work with managers to create stretch goals and development plans to advance internal talent pipeline.
  • Support professional development by proposing resources and programs to meet specific goals; develop knowledge of the offerings of the Center for Workforce Development (CWD), HBS, and other providers; review requests in relation to HBS Online guidelines and manage department’s professional development and training budget.
  • Manage HBS Online initiatives and training programs, for example: communication style assessment and training, Staff Buddy matching program, professional development nomination programs, and fellowship opportunities.

Employee Engagement and Change Management
  • Conduct in-house engagement survey (every 18 months), design appropriate follow-up activities, collect feedback, and conduct pulse surveys to ensure that the organization continues to make progress on areas of focus.
  • Develop internal communications to enhance alignment of day-to-day decisions with organizational priorities.
  • Lead efforts to establish a positive culture for HBS Online as well as promote HBS-wide opportunities that reinforce links to the larger community. Guide the work of the Culture @ Work group ensuring that there is proactive planning and reinforcement for a culture that attracts, retains, and supports talent at HBS Online.
  • Provide guidance to and act as a resource for managers as they navigate personnel and/or team challenges. Help problem solve and, as appropriate, escalate to central HR.
  • Provide project management support to organizational initiatives.
  • Manage culture and employee engagement initiatives. Oversee staff recognition including Rewards and Recognition Program.

Talent Life Cycle
  • Partner closely with the Human Resources Director to support and illustrate the needs of a growing and evolving organization, including organizational structure proposals, retention initiatives, special projects, etc.
  • Oversee organizational onboarding practices to support new hires in successfully transitioning to HBS and HBS. Online. Oversee offboarding practices to support smooth transition for employee and organization.
  • Work with Talent Acquisition Manager on internship and co-op set-up; oversee internship experience in close collaboration with the manager to encourage learning and engagement.
  • Contribute to recruiting efforts during periods of surge recruiting activity.

Other Responsibilities
  • Ensure confidential information is handled with appropriate discretion.
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries.
  • Serve as part of a lean team and provide back-up to other positions as needed.
  • This role may also work on similar topics for HBS Executive Education in the future.
  • This role is responsible for other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 7 years’ relevant work experience is required

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience in one or more Human Resources functional areas strongly preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communication skills required
  • Effective presentation skills, addressing groups of employees regularly in meetings and webinars ranging from 5 up to 150+ attendees
  • Ability to problem solve the way forward as the team encounters an evolving, and sometimes novel, agenda
  • Experience coaching and developing managers and individual contributors
  • Experience with navigating difficult conversations and working toward mutually beneficial outcomes
  • Facilitation experience and the ability to influence at all levels
  • Facility with Microsoft Office, with an emphasis on PowerPoint and Excel
  • Pitches in where needed - “no job is too big or small”

Additional Information

This is a hybrid position which we consider to be a combination of remote and onsite work at our Boston, MA based campus. HBS expects all staff to be onsite 3 days per week and departments provide onsite coverage Monday – Friday. Specific hours and days onsite will be determined by business needs and are subject to change with appropriate advanced notice.
