The Department of Correction (DOC) is currently recruiting for Correctional General Maintenance Officers to fill a current vacancy at Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers, and York Correctional Institution in Niantic. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
- This position is full-time, following a first shift schedule, on-site, scheduled Monday - Friday, 7:45 AM - 3:00 PM.
- This position is entitled to excellent benefits including health, dental and a 25 year hazardous duty retirement.
- Selected candidates will be required to attend a 14 week hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development located in Cheshire, CT.

The Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) is the agency responsible for corrections in the U.S. state of Connecticut. The agency operates 13 correctional facilities. It has its headquarters in Wethersfield. The DOC protects public safety by ensuring offenders serve their sentences of imprisonments in facilities that are safe, human, and provide re-entry programming.
The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction is a unified system; all sentenced and un-sentenced offenders are supervised by the DOC. The Department also provides supervision for offenders on parole, community release, and other discretionary release programs.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for inmates and/or independently performing a full range of tasks in general maintenance and repair of buildings and maintenance systems.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Maintenance of critical systems such as security fence and motorized gates, cell and facility door locks and hardware, and surveillance cameras and infrastructure;
- Supervising assigned inmates at a Correctional Institution;
- Keeping record of tool inventory/control;
- Snow and ice removal to maintain safe access for the police, medical, staff and public;
- Protecting the health and safety of the public, staff and inmates;
- Maintaining mandated compliance with Federal & State statute and agency directives and policies by assuring humane conditions of confinement in the facility through repair and maintenance; and
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of building materials and methods of repair and maintenance;
- Knowledge of basic principles and techniques of plumbing, electrical repair, carpentry, painting, mechanical maintenance, and masonry;
- Skills

- Considerable ability to recognize maintenance problems and determine corrective operations needed;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of large buildings and utility services.
NOTE: Based on an individual’s technical experience, the length of credited service will be determined at the discretion of facility management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
Experienceperforming technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a militarybase, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the GeneralExperience on a year for year basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Preferred candidates will possess a construction/trade license or welding certification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to respond to after-hour emergencies as requested by facilities supervisors.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
Inaddition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application,a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made beforepersons are certified for appointment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
- A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbentsin this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates who haveaccess to tools of the trades as weapons and may be exposed to considerabledanger and discomfort associated with tasks and machinery used in the trades.
