The Chief Technology Officer Organization’s vision is to raise the bar for technical excellence, talent, strategy, and standards across Technology. It also seeks to cultivate and foster technical innovation, as well as elevate and amplify the technical heartbeat of the organization.

The Developer Advocacy team are dedicated to helping our engineering community develop and deploy code faster and safer. The Engineer will focus on developer relations, providing hands-on engineering guidance and support to drive community adoption of the patterns, practices, and tooling that make up Building Software the Amex Way. 


Essential to this role is the ability to pick up new technical skills quickly, overcome teething problems on new tech stacks and have the growth mindset to be an early adopter of new elements in the Amex Way while bringing other engineers with you on the journey. The Developer Advocacy team is also responsible for encouraging our engineering community to make Open Source contributions.

Engineers on this team engage in large multi-year programs focused on operationalizing the way code is designed and written at American Express.

You will work with others providing a strong and credible presence within specific internal communication channels (e.g. Slack) to promote and provide mentorship for engineers. As the "voice of the engineer", you'll collaborate with teams that provide services and support, in order to remove friction and improve product utilization. In addition, you'll support the market leaders, by inspiring growth mindset within the developer community.


 "We have fun!" is one of our principles. You'll actively contribute and participate in adoption events and discussions (DevCons, Guild meetings, campus events, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Excellent problem-solving skills combined with self-motivation to pick up new technical stacks quickly and bring others with you on the journey
  • Empathy for the challenges of software development and active curiosity about overcoming these challenges through software development, training and solution support
  • Excellent oral communications with a passion for listening and helping engineers find solutions for their business needs and opportunities
  • Superb networking skills and the ability to work cooperatively with and gain the respect of software developers and influencers
  • Ability to give constructive feedback to engineering teams that are service providers, to increase product adoption and remove areas of friction

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience mentoring others
  • Phenomenal developer skills
  • Experience advocating for engineers and helping them learn and use new technology
  • Up to 2 years of software development experience in a professional environment and/or comparable experience such as:
    • Understanding of Agile or other rapid application development methods
    • Exposure to design and coding across one or more platforms and languages as 
      appropriate
    • Exposure to methods relating to application design, software development, and 
      automated testing
    • General knowledge of distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, and relational 
      databases
    • Understanding of object-oriented design and coding with variety of languages
  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related field required

Salary Range: $70,000.00 to $135,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
