The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Conservation Police Division, has multiple opportunities for Seasonal Patrol Officers (EnCon Rangers) throughout the State Park system. The mission of the State Environmental Conservation Police is to provide natural resource protection and public safety through education, outreach and enforcement.
Position Highlights
Seasonal Patrol Officers, also called EnCon Rangers, assist the State Environmental Conservation Police by working with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of our State Parks resources and activities while providing for the enforcement of laws and regulations.
Selected candidates will perform the EnCon Ranger duties primarily at State Parks providing for security and enforcement of laws and regulations for State Parks. This position is open to those at least 21 years of age by May 30, 2025. This position requires attendance of a mandatory training course (Ranger Training Academy) for those without POST certification. Applicants must be available on weekends from Saturday, March 15th through Sunday, May 11th for in-person training. Applicants must also be available for remote learning on select weekdays each week of the Ranger Training Academy.
Selection Plan
- The selected candidates must be fluent in English, be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment and have a valid motor vehicle license.
- The selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (including work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and members of the public.
Selected candidates will have been:
- Employed as an EnCon Ranger by DEEP's EnCon Police in 2021, 2022, 2023 or 2024.
OR
- Successfully complete one hundred and twenty (120) hours Seasonal Ranger, DEEP provided training course prior to May 30th.
OR
- Currently employed as a Connecticut police officer with a current POST certification.
OR
- Retired in good standing within the last 3 years from a Connecticut police agency without any unresolved or pending disciplinary action as a sworn officer with a valid POST certification.
PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection performs patrol officer duties of a seasonal nature.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Provides natural resource protection and public safety through education, outreach and enforcement, as a primary state park, forest or recreation area visitor contact;
- Interacts with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of department resources and activities;
- Performs first aid duties;
- Enforces laws and regulations governing visitor behavior and the use of department lands and facilities;
- Patrols assigned areas to detect evidence of ongoing violations by observing actual activities, damage and indicators left by violators;
- Prepares reports of daily activity, case reports, and other reports as assigned;
- Performs firefighting duties;
- Performs a variety of entry level clerical duties for the purpose of maintaining records;
- May supervise other seasonal employees as assigned;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of
- criminal and motor vehicle laws and law enforcement procedures;
- boating laws and regulations;
- regulations pertaining to use of parks and forest lands;

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with criminal and motor vehicle laws and law enforcement procedures;
- Experience with regulations pertaining to use of parks and forest lands;
- Experience communicating over the phone, via email, and in-person.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.
- Incumbents performing patrol officer functions must currently possess either:
- A Police Officer Standard Training (POST) certification or be eligible for POST recertification without completing the Basic Training program again (i.e. must be current or retired within two (2) years of last POST certified required employment).
- Incumbents must successfully complete a Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) approved Seasonal Ranger training course, provided by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).
- Incumbents in this class may be required to meet the following:
- Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.
