Job Synopsis

The Maintenance Assistant works on a team to maintain the beautiful grounds of MCC's Akron campus. This position involves a variety of landscaping and general maintenance tasks, including invasive plant management, landscaping projects, and general maintenance tasks as assigned.  This part-time position (20 hours/week) offers flexible hours and primarily involves outdoor work.

Essential:  

  • High School Diploma.  
  • Basic proficiency with general landscaping hand tools. 
  • Over three months experience in landscaping, groundskeeping and/or maintenance.  
  • Ability to take initiative to start and complete projects without regular oversight. 
  • Works well with a team and is respectful to diverse colleagues and campus guests  
  • Willingness to engage in conversation as needed with guests, staff, and volunteers 

    Employment eligibility: Legally eligible to work in the U.S. MCC offers of employment are subject to a successful criminal background check(s). 

Preferred 

  • Experience working with native plants, horticulture, environmental science or similar field  
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Word, Zoom, Outlook email and web browsers 
  • Beginning knowledge of more than one trade (carpentry, plumbing, electricity, HVAC). 
  • Beginning knowledge of appliance repair, mechanics and basic machine operating.  
  • Valid driver’s license.

Key Responsibilities

Specific Tasks and Duties: Landscape / General Maintenance 

  • Work on landscaping and general maintenance tasks and projects as assigned. Meet with supervisor to give progress updates. 
  • Maintain grounds including tasks such as weeding, mulching, transplanting, removal of invasives in woodland, improvement of woodland.  
  • Establish and maintain green mulch, native micro meadows, woodland, wetland, bioswale, and other landscapes. 
  • Plant trees and shrubs. 
  • Transport plants and goods on site via electric golf cart.  
  •  Join team meetings and respond to MCC electronic communications.  
  • Assist with community/outdoor education events. 
  • Other duties as assigned on a temporary basis. 

Supervision: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.  

Travel expectations: No overnight travel. 

Physical Activity/Demands: 

  • Occasionally ascending or descending stairs/ladders, etc.  
  • Occasionally remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.  
  • Constantly moving about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another.  
  • Constantly light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds.  
  • Occasionally operating power tools 

Environment Conditions – exposed to: 

  • Occasionally low temperatures. 
  • Occasionally high temperatures 
  • Occasionally outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.

Salary Details

Base salary: $19.73. Starting salary may be adjusted up to $21.92 based on previous experience.

Medical, dental and vision, 23 pro-rated days paid vacation, sick time and 10 holidays/year. Life insurance provided, as well as long and short term disability coverage. The retirement plan, with MCC contribution of 7%, begins after six months of employment.
