Position Purpose:
Responsible for performing a variety of routine hazardous and non-hazardous waste tasks in the movement and processing of various waste in various container size/type. Tasks could include: Follow procedures & direction, perform manual labor, proper usage of PPE, operate mobile equipment (manual and powered), operate fixed / stationary equipment, loading & unloading containers, perform equipment inspections, identification of various container size/type, scanning container movements, consolidation of containers & material, staging containers in designated area, recognize markings & labels. Tasks will be performed on a daily basis in the designated processing area as assigned by Leads & Supervisors in order to meet processing objectives for material disposal.

Primary Duties/responsibilities:
  • Work as directed by supervisors, leads, trainers or mentors
  • Recognize various container size & type
  • Recognize labels & markings
  • Understand and follow procedures & processes
  • Load and unload various size containers (totes, drums, tankers, trailers. etc.) using mechanical or manual means
  • Use a variety of tools such as impact wrenches, shovels, jackhammers, etc.
  • Transport hazardous materials from storage locations within the facility as directed
  • Decontaminate and dispose of empty drums and/or containers according to RCRA and disposal guidelines
  • Assist in completing all necessary paperwork for processing materials to include transportation of materials to and from various locations
  • Perform general housekeeping duties
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area
  • Inspect material handling equipment as required
  • Assist in the loading/unloading of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials at designated sites utilizing appropriate equipment for which you are appropriately trained.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education / Experience / Background:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • 3 to 6 months general labor experience
  • Forklift experience preferred

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate through reading and writing
  • Trained in the use of material handling equipment

Required Certification / Licenses / Training:
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER training preferred

Physical Requirements:
  • You must have the ability to continuosly stand, walk, and occassionally sit.
  • Eye-hand coordination is frequently needed with occasional fine-finger movement.
  • You will frequently bend and twist, occasionally climbing/working aloft and reaching above the shoulder level.
  • The noise level is moderate.
  • You must have the ability to handle hazardous materials: material handling, drum handling, waste processing and consolidation, waste sampling and handling, and household hazardous waste.
  • You must have the ability to lift up to 20 lbs, frequently lift up to 50 lbs, and occassionally lift up to 100 lbs.
  • You will be working outdoors, exposed to weather conditions and occasionally work indoors.
  • You are required to use Personal Protective Equipment, such as safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, steel-toed shoes, apron, Tyvek coat, full-faced respirator, a powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • You will occasionally use hearing protection.
