Job Title: Ministry on Racism Programs Coordinator

Supervisor:  Associate Secretary for Organizational Cultural Transformation

Hours:  100% Time (35 hours/week) for one year (December 2024 – December 2025)

Location:  Anywhere in the United States of America with reliable Internet and phone access

Salary:  $51,000-55,000 + benefits   

Term: One year (not renewable)

The Ministry on Racism (MOR) Programs Coordinator works closely with the Associate Secretary for Organizational Cultural Transformation and the Ministry on Racism Associate to help members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) understand and end racism and ageism, transforming our religious society into a beloved community, whole and enriched by racial, ethnic, and age diversity and equity. This term-limited position will support programs and services to Friends and Friends meetings, largely to affiliated meetings in the unprogrammed Quaker tradition in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Coordinator will work with, and be a part of, various staff and volunteer committees across the organization. The Coordinator also supports the FGC staff in its anti-racism and youth work and identifies resources that nurture anti-racism and youth programs within the Religious Society of Friends. The Ministry on Racism Programs ground their work in worship and provide opportunities for Friends to share their journeys, experiences, and challenges with respect to race, racism, and ageism. Creating a blessed community that supports authentic relationships and changes harmful behaviors across ages and races requires a significant cultural shift that will multiply our opportunities to realize the Divine in our lives, both individually and corporately. 

The COVID-19 vaccination is mandatory for this position (unless you have a medical exemption.) Applicants need to live in the USA, and we are not accepting applications from anyone who is not authorized to work in the USA. This is a full-time Term Limited position, beginning December 2024.

Desired Qualifications:

Education: College graduate or equivalent.

Experience

  1. Familiarity with the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)
  2. Working collegially and collaboratively with others.
  3. Race and racism within the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
  4. Interacting with people of high-school, college, and young-adult ages.
  5. Approaches to educating and challenging people and organizations on issues of racism and racial diversity, particularly within the Religious Society of Friends.
  6. Supporting People of Color as they struggle to live and function fully within the Religious Society of Friends.
  7. Building and sustaining Spirit-grounded intergenerational communities.
  8. Motivating and supporting volunteers.                         

Skills

  1. Listening with sensitivity and compassion to both individuals and groups.
  2. Responding creatively to conflicts and strong feelings while remaining centered in the Spirit.
  3. Planning, organizing and keeping track of complex projects. 
  4. Using online communications to disseminate information and maintain connection. 
  5. Communicating in writing, including e-mail, letters and reports.
  6. Communicating verbally, including telephone, in person, and presentations to groups.
  7. Navigation of word processing, database management, and website editing software, as well as Zoom, Slack, Excel and Canva.
  8. Ability to speak and write Spanish fluently are a plus.

General

  1. Familiarity with the Religious Society of Friends.
  2. Understanding of anti-racist and youth work as a Spirit-grounded ministry.
  3. Available for evenings and limited periodic travel, including weekends.
  4. Able to work effectively and efficiently out of one’s own home.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The chief responsibility of the Committee for Nurturing Ministries (CNM) Racism Coordinator is to assist the Ministry on Racism and Youth Ministries Programs. This will require working with the Associate Secretary for Organizational Cultural Transformation, Ministry on Racism Associate, Young Adult & Youth Ministries Coordinator, CNM, Institutional Assessment Implementation Committee (IAIC), Friends for Racial Equity and Education (FREE) clerks in discerning and interpreting the directions and programs to assist with the work necessary to carry out those programs. 

  1. Support ongoing and new virtual events – including Black Indigenous People Of Color (BIPOC) Women’s Space, Meetings for Worship, and Retreats for Youth and Adults — offered through the Ministry on Racism
  2. Support current & future in-person events and conferences
  3. Participate in semi-regular Quaker Youth Workers Meet-Ups for Quaker Youth Workers from across Friends General Conference’s (FGC’s) affiliated meetings and other Friends Youth Workers events.
  4. Support and participate in monthly IAIC and FREE FGC meetings to support the staff in its anti-racism work. Facilitate some FREE anti-racism education activities at staff meetings.
  5. Assist in the implementation of the recommendations from the 2018 Institutional Assessment on racism in FGC.
  6. Support the Youth Ministries Young Adult & Youth Coordinator with the Young Adult & Youth Ministries Program working closely with the Coordinator to generate programs within FGC for children, teens and young adults. This could include virtual programming, in-person retreats, re-launching the Spiritual Mentorship Program or other program ideas.
  7. Assist the Ministry on Racism Associate to facilitate Quaker participation in the White Privilege Conference.
  8. Represent FGC in the Quaker Coalition to Uproot Racism Program planning.
  9. Participate along with the Associate Secretary for Organizational Cultural Transformation in planning consultations and trainings with the goal of catalyzing anti-racism work across the Religious Society of Friends.
  10. Help to connect the Ministry on Racism/Youth Ministries Program’s work with other parts of the organization, such as:
    • Communications (website, social media, Vitality newsletter) Development (database maintenance, supporting fundraising) The Gathering (supporting anti-racism training with Gathering committees and workshop leaders, supporting the Pre-Gathering Retreat for Friends of Color & their Families).
    • The Spiritual Deepening program (assist in finding facilitators, collaborate on programming relevant to anti-racism)
  11. Tech support for virtual events.
  12. Explain and interpret MOR’s mission and program to Friends and meetings primarily in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
  13. Support and nurture other Friends involved in MOR/YMP work, particularly those who have participated in FGC-sponsored events, or otherwise through FGC programs, and at the FGC Annual Gathering of Friends.
  14. Attend all meetings of the Committee for Nurturing Ministries, and occasionally other FGC committee meetings as well.
  15. Travel to at least one yearly meeting in session each year.
  16. Support new volunteers in the work of the Ministry on Racism Programs by relationship building at events.
  17. Strategize with relevant committees and the Associate Secretary for Organizational Cultural Transformation about how to support FGC’s commitment to transform into an actively anti-racist faith community.
  18. Help the Associate Secretary for Organizational Cultural Transformation determine a sustainable slate of Ministry on Racism programming before this one year position comes to a close.
