Shift

The intern is expected to work a total of 140 hours between January 13 and April 30, 2025. The schedule is extremely flexible and depends on the availability and preferences of the successful candidate.



Job Summary

The Open Education Intern will work with the Affordable Course Content Librarian to learn about the theory and current practice of open education. Open education is a set of practices around removing barriers for students, most notably financial ones such as the cost of textbooks; specific strategies and resources vary by discipline. The internship will include practical work and assigned readings. No background in library work or open education is required. The intern will receive guidance and support, but will be expected to work independently on assignments and projects. The Open Education Intern reports to the Affordable Course Content Librarian.



Since this internship is open to graduate students in any program, the projects and readings will be tailored to the successful candidate’s interest and knowledge level. Possible areas of work include recording interviews, implementing accessibility standards, graphic design, data analysis, copyediting, and more.

The intern will work primarily in Young Library on UK’s main campus in Lexington. A computer and workstation will be provided. This is a typical non-public-facing cubicle/office environment.


Potential tasks

• Help with ongoing research on the impact of textbook and other course material costs at UK. For example:
  • Assist with data analysis and report writing from the UK Student Course Materials Cost Survey
  • Gather information from syllabi on the cost of course materials
  • Interview students or faculty on their experiences with textbooks and other course materials
  • Research other ways to gather and present information on the impact of course materials
• Learn about the various types of work involved in academic librarianship/open education. For example:
  • Shadow Affordable Course Content Librarian on consultations with faculty about adopting or creating open educational resources
  • Meet with subject librarians to learn about how different disciplines incorporate open education
  • Attend library trainings, webinars, meetings, etc.
  • Participate in the professional open educational community (attend virtual or in-person conferences/meetings, opportunity to present and/or publish on the work done during the internship, etc.)
• Assist the Affordable Course Content Librarian in supporting authors of open educational resources. For example:
  • Review drafts of projects for accessibility compliance
  • Create cover images and do other graphic design for resources
  • Read over drafts and provide copyediting notes
  • Upload materials to publishing platforms and create metadata
• Research open education initiatives and strategies for possible implementation at UK
• Other projects of interest to the intern

• Background, knowledge of, or interest in open education, college affordability, and/or academic library work
• Existing skillset in one or more areas related to one the internship’s potential projects (e.g. data analysis, copyediting, graphic design, interviewing, or web accessibility)
