Job Responsibilities

Purpose of the Position: Under limited supervision, performs inspections, interviews and technical reviews for an environmental health program in a public health department. Investigates complaints and recommends enforcement action as necessary. May also serve in a lead role and/or supervise work of assigned staff. May serve as the sole environmental health specialist providing environmental health program services in a single multi-county area. This position works to promote and protect the health and safety of the residents of Cobb and Douglas Counties.

Essential Functions, included but not limited to: 

•   Ensures compliance with state and local rules and regulations associated with the Food Service, Swimming Pool, and Tourist Accommodation programs

•   Inspects and investigates facilities for compliance with applicable health and sanitation laws and regulations within assigned programs

•   Monitors, tracks, and maintain records on compliance

•   Supervises and plans work of assigned staff

•   Initiates, negotiates, and implements enforcement and other actions as appropriate

•   Investigates and responds to complaints of potential health hazards and requests for service

•   Provides Public Health technical assistance and regulatory interpretation of environmental health codes

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: EHS 4 - Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, which includes the completion of 27 semester or 40 quarter hours in laboratory sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, etc.) and one (1) year of experience at the lower level PH Envir Compl. Specialist 3 (RCP122) or equivalent position. Note: Any agency-specified certification/training that may be experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in public health or a laboratory science, current Registered Environmental Health Specialist credential, current standardization in Food Service inspections, current Certified Pool Operator certification, current Level I or Level II On-site Sewage Management Systems Inspector certification, previous supervision experience. 

Work Conditions & Physical Demands A combination of office and field work. Office work entails data entry, filing, and customer interaction both in-person and via phone. Field work involves inspections of facilities and requires sufficient mobility to move through workspaces and view areas under shelving and equipment. Swimming pool inspections primarily take place outdoors during warm weather months (April – September). Lifting of items during normal work should not exceed 25 pounds.

Salary Information: $61,706.94 Annually/ Pay Grade L
