MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel development and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.

Responsibilities Include:

You will apply engineering principles to analysis, modeling, and simulation of structural and mechanical systems for a novel advanced nuclear reactor project. Perform linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analysis of such factors as stress, force, vibration, and material plasticity. Compare results to the provisions of governing codes, standards, and orders. Perform dynamic seismic analysis of structures, systems, and components, including soil-structure interaction analyses.

  • Decompose project goals into defined and controlled design requirements using a systems engineering approach and applying digital engineering tools for tracking requirements and design parameters.
  • Use design methodologies, technologies, and processes which are best practice for the technical discipline to develop a design, and to validate that the design meets defined requirements.
  • Provide support to design teams in development of alternatives analysis, equipment selection and sizing, vendor equipment summaries and evaluations, specifications, drawings, supporting analysis and calculations, and engineering design files.
  • Perform structural mechanics designs including evaluations/analyses of the behavior of structures, systems and components under normal operating conditions, natural phenomena hazards, and accident conditions to support operating advanced nuclear reactors. Provide support to Safety Analysis through simulation of postulated accidents and their structural/mechanical consequences.
  • Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards. Document analyses following approved engineering process requirements.
  • May be spokesperson to customer in area of expertise.
  • Supply leadership, peer review, checking, and consultation to fellow engineers. Be primary author on professional technical reports and presentations. Advise on capability enhancement for lab-wide structural engineering service.
