Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Senior Mechanical Research Engineer to work in our Energy, Environment, Science and Technology (EES&T) Department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off. You will report to Department Manager of the Hydrogen and Electrochemistry department.

You will work in the hydrogen and thermal systems group. The hydrogen and thermal systems group spans research between grid, microgrid, and nuclear energy (both electrical and thermal), through energy conversion technology focusing on high temperature solid oxide electrolysis and finishing with the production of chemical and materials.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Responsibilities will be split between engineering and research activities. Engineering activities will include designing, procuring, building, validating, and testing of complex test facilities, and assisting industry in validation and commercialization of new hydrogen and hydrogen-adjacent technology. Research activities will include data analysis, publication and proposal writing, and research presentations.
  • Document developed designs and ensure manufacture of system and validation testing is adequate to meet relevant codes, standards and technical requirements are maintained. 
  • Develop and maintain the assigned systems/equipment. Perform calculations related to the specifications of project, including analysis and evaluation of location, material resources, and mechanical design.
  • Provide solutions to technical problems and recommendations for improvements in production activities. This may include planning, design, and constructing manufacturing facilities and similar structures or production processes.
  • Support and lead the development of new projects at the INL in area of specialty, including the development of proposals and business plans.
  • Ensure any design modification meets the technical baseline requirements and applicable codes and regulations. Recommend and initiate modifications to support programmatic missions and operational goals and lead preparation of design efforts.
  • Ensure consistency in operation characteristics among applicable documents such as drawings, technical manuals, operating instructions, emergency operating procedures.
  • Enhance technical/professional skills of junior engineering staff through mentoring.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Level 3: Bachelor’s in Engineering and 5 years related experience. Master’s and 2 years. PhD and 2 years.
  • Level 4: Bachelor’s in Engineering and 9 years related experience. Master’s and 6 years. PhD and 4 years


Desired experience:

  • Experience developing complex mechanical, fluid, and thermal systems.
  • Professional experience with electrochemical or hydrogen systems.
  • Solid modeling and drawing with autocad, solidworks, or similar.
  • Familiar with Piping and Instrumentation diagrams, fluid and electrical control, heat exchangers, data acquisition, data analysis, and hazard analysis.
  • Experience with proposal and research publication development.


Job Information: 

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($91,008 - $186,588) / Level 4 ($109,260 - $223,908 ). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
