Job Summary

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) is Harvard’s largest school, comprised of diverse, multi-component sectors including research laboratories, libraries, residential, athletic facilities, offices, classrooms, IT, and museums. This role is an integral member of the FAS and Office for Sustainability (OFS) teams.  This role has two primary responsibilities including (1) implementing projects focused on reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in FAS buildings and (2) management of a group of undergraduates, called REPs, in order to increase energy efficiency through occupant behavior.  This position will be managed by OFS yet work as part of the FAS’s Office of Physical Resources and Planning (OPRP).  The position will implement the REP program with the REPs, set goals, measure the programs’ success, and evaluate opportunities for improvement. In addition, the position will work with the FAS Energy & Sustainability team and Associate Director of Building Mechanical Systems in OPRP to manage the implementation of sustainability related projects. The role has seasonal fluctuations with a focus on supporting the REPs during the academic year with project management support throughout the calendar year.   

Position Description

Manage FAS Energy & Sustainability Projects:

  • With the OPRP/FAS leadership, manage projects, budgets, and expenditures related to the FAS Energy and Sustainability Program. 
  • Working with the OPRP/FAS Energy & Sustainability Program colleagues to identify metrics/KPIs to measure progress as well as technical innovations for a range of sustainability initiatives related to building operations. 

Manage REP:

  • Work with OPRP/FAS senior leadership to identify opportunities for integration of energy efficiency and/or sustainability into operational procedures in dorm/house life. 
    • Implement, oversee and coordinate outreach and educational campaigns for the REP with implementation in the first-year dormitories, and undergraduate Houses. 
    • Design projects, campaigns, competitions to measure and elucidate the resource consumption of our campus (for instance, measure heating flows in dorms, and the electricity consumption of the Houses.)
  • Manage, mentor, & coach ~ 25 undergraduate student employees (REPs)
    • Interview, hire and onboard the REPs
    • Manage the workload and accountability for the REPs including experiential learning experiences designed to integrate sustainability into operational procedures. 
  • Analyze, interpret and present the data in actionable ways. Communicate progress and success of REP to OPRP, FAS leadership and other internal stakeholders. 
  • Manage/monitor the REP budget including processing weekly payroll to stay within budget. 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is required. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of direct experience in campus sustainability, institutional change, facility energy reduction strategies or applicable experience.

  • Project management experience 
  • Understanding of building systems and energy consumption of building
  • Experience working with and mentoring college age students preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainability
  • Experience collecting, analyzing and presenting data to understand and drive decision making 
  • Excellent and proven communication, teamwork and relationship building skills
  • Must be able to initiate and implement projects with teams and often without immediate oversight 
  • Requires flexibility to adjust schedule to work outside normal business hours including but not limited to early morning hours, evening hours and weekends to accommodate student meetings and events. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity, equity and contribution to an inclusive work and learning  environment. 

Technology Skills Required:Experience with all Microsoft Office applications is necessary; basic graphic design and data analysis skills are highly desirable.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
