Role Summary
Training Advisor – Life Underwriting is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing training programs that align with NLG’s underwriting philosophy and processes. This role involves assessing training needs, delivering effective learning solutions, and providing expert advice that contributes to continuous growth and development of underwriters. The trainer will collaborate with internal stakeholders including medical, claims, underwriting leaders, and quality assurance to identify gaps, train to gaps, and measure effectiveness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversees new Underwriter onboarding, including scheduling cohorts, training, assessing competence, and providing feedback to new hires and leaders
- Designs and implements comprehensive training programs for new underwriting trainees focusing on fundamental underwriting principles, risk assessment, and NLG guidelines and procedures
- Partners with internal stakeholders to identify skill gaps or opportunities and designs, develops, and implements training to promote consistency and efficiency
- Creates and leads courses related to updated guidelines, new underwriting tools, and continuing education topics for department
- Measures training effectiveness and provides recommendations for improvement
- Serves as a subject matter expert and point of contact for the department.
- Promotes a supportive learning environment, encouraging all underwriters to continue developing their skills
- Special underwriting projects and presentations
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree-preferred
- 7 years of life underwriting experience; preferred background would include designations such as FALU, FLMI, or other course work within the ALU, LOMA or similar industry organizations
- Experience in teaching adult learners and curriculum development preferred
- Critical thinker and results oriented
- Excellent communicator
- Understanding of how to develop risk management and underwriting programs
- Understanding of how to implement training programs that support department change initiatives
- Ability to work independently, as well as being a strong team player
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; strong business acumen
- Position is strongly preferred onsite/hybrid with the expectation that you are in the office three days per week with current campus days being Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (subject to change with advance notification and manager discretion)
